Congrats Tim Saunders For Tying The Knot!

As I have always called him, "my favorite Councilperson whose district I don't live in" is getting married this Saturday at the Fox Theater in Pomona. This will be the 2nd wedding to be held there since Juan & Susie's ceremony earlier this year. As with everything, it will also be on the day of Pomona's Art Walk which I look forward to every month. The downtown is gonna be happening this Saturday no doubt.

I also managed to stop by yesterday at the all-new Fox Sports Bar & Grill for the Raider/Cowboy game. This place is beautiful and we will be hitting the spot once again on Saturday. They have a great happy hour special from 4-8pm, which is 2 for 1 drinks and 1/2 off all appetizers! And let me tell you, they were fresh and delicious. I might be planning an event at this location in the next several weeks...

Firestone's PALE... A True Cali Pale Ale!

Oh what a lovely summer we have been blessed with! I'm sure at a cost due to our planet's weather mess. Regardless, this whole summer has felt like Spring for the first time since I can remember. And what better way than to enjoy it than with a very delicious brew from Firestone. Here is their California Pale Ale.

I've sampled this brew quite a few times this year but have not written about it. First time I picked it up was at a Ralphs market, I think in Pasadena. They had it on sale for $7.99, which is an excellent price. I just picked up another six pack over at Albertsons in Montclair, or is it Ontario over there near Mountain south of the 10. Anywhoo... Here is what I thought of it.

Delicious, it actually has flavors you can taste, but they dont overpower you and therefore create a smooth drink. Almost like a typical Amber Lager's smoothness, but you can taste what makes it a Pale Ale. This is definitely a quality beer that goes well with all. The wife had some and she just loves this one! She confirmed my experience, because she had her first one on her own and came up to me and said, "whoa, this is a good beer!".

Ratings, LOL, okay, definitely a 4+ out of 5. Maybe a 4.25, Im not sure, but near a 5 for a Pale Ale for sure. I still find Drifter Pale as one of the best in this style, but you cannot go wrong with Firestone's California Pale Ale. Look for it at better markets such as Albertsons, Ralphs, Vons and Pavilions, especially if it's for sale.

Pomona Police Stays In Pomona!

Looks like the idea of 'outsourcing' our safety to the county is now doomed. Thanks to all the overwhelming support of our citizens! And thanks to the council for doing away with it tonight (although some of you knew you had to in order to save your seat). A special thanks for being a true Pomona representative, Mr. Tim Saunders who opposed the idea of outsourcing to the Sheriffs from the beginning, you are truly the people's man. What a scare it was to think we might lose our officers to the county.

21 Choices In Claremont Robbed

I have visited this 'newer' yogurt place up the street many times with the kids and we love it. My daughter is especially fond of the 'make your own' yogurt frenzy. I was very saddened and pissed off to hear that it had recently been robbed late at night. To help spread the news, here is the cut and paste of the Claremont Now Daily Bulletin Blog:

Armed robbers tied up two Claremont yogurt shop employees after stealing money from the business late Sunday.

Police said the robbers approached one of the employees of 21 Choices at 11:49 p.m. when he walked out of store to dump the trash, said Claremont police Lt. Mike Ciszek. The business at 817 W. Foothill Blvd. was closed at the time.

One of the men, who was armed with a handgun, ordered the employee to lie on the ground. The other man entered the store and confronted another employee who was counting money.

That robber had the employee put all the cash in a tip jar and then took the employee to the bathroom. The robber tied the employee's hands. The other employee was also placed in the bathroom and his hands were tied behind his back, Ciszek said.

One of the robbers is black, 40 to 45-years-old, 5-feet-7 inches tall, 200 pounds and has short black hair. He wore a white baseball hat, a light blue button-up shirt and a black tie with red dots. He wore blue jeans and thick-framed reading glasses. The second robbers is a thin, black man in his 20s. He is more than 6-feet-tall and wore a baggy white T-shirt, dark jeans and brown hiking boots.

Pomona Police And Sheriff Update

This is the latest update after Monday's Council Meeting. If I am correct, the police item was not on the agenda, but a mention of it was. This is direct from Facebook (Pomona PD):

"Yesterday evening the council voted to approve the contract between the City and PPOA. Mayor Rothman took a moment to publicly thank the police department for their sacrifices. Later in the evening, Councilperson Atchley made a motion to quash the LASD issue and Councilperson Saunders gave a second. During open discussion, Councilperson Lantz wanted to wait until August 2nd to make a decision because council has yet to receive the independent study they allegedly paid $25K for. Councilperson Rodriguez wanted to move forward with the LASD Phase 2 study. Councilperson Soto and Mayor Rothman basically said nothing. The item is now scheduled for the August 2nd council meeting at which time they will "definitely" vote whether or not the issue is put on the ballot in November."

So, let me see if I get this right. Tim Saunders, the lone opponent at once seems to be joined by Steve Atchley now? And Paula Lantz wants to at least see the $25,000 study. Freddie Rodriguez has basically sold himself to the Sheriffs, and the rest who I know supported this outsourcing, are now saying nothing? Yet, the contract between the City and the Pomona Police Association is approved?

I can't think this afternoon, I checked and I'm out of coffee and have been too lazy to go to Starbucks for some fresh ground. Anyone care to chime in on this or any new info?

Around The Garden

It's been a while since I've posted anything Garden related. I've really slacked in this department for quite some time now. But with the recent heat wave of the last few days, I caught myself up early this morning to water the yard. Then I remembered and snap a few shots of stuff before it fries. (It shouldn't, but just in case). Here's what's up around the garden this morning (Click any image to enlarge).

The 'Chaste Tree' blooms are looking great! These will last over a month, but the purple blooms stand out so much! I think I caught a bee or some flying bug in this shot.



The grape is doing it's thing in the overhead arbor... and there are oranges overhanging as well.



This little pine was planted in January 2008 at about 4 feet in height. It is currently around 15 feet! You can also spot a mature 'Sweetgum' in the back, as well as some foliage of an 'Angel's Trumpet'.



And finally, a nice little tropical corner in the raw. I usually would sweep the area before I take a picture, but I kind of like the messy leaves on the flagstone. This area is usually shaded from about 11pm til the end of the day by an orange tree.

Urgent Council Meeting & Sheriff Vote

Checked my emails a few days ago and wanted to help spread the word:

"Please join the Pomona Police Officers' Association at a rally in front of the Pomona Council Chambers on July 19, 2010 at 6:45PM. The council will be discussing the issue of getting rid of Pomona P.D. and contracting with the L.A. County Sheriffs' Department. We need all of our friends to come out and show their support for keeping the Pomona Police Department. Share the attached flyer with your friends and neighbors and bring them also. Food and beverages will be provided for those in attendance."

Betrayal In Proud Pomona

The L.A. Weekly has a great article on the recent events concerning Pomona's City & Police woes. The writer Mark Cromer, writes one of the best articles concering our situation. I love how he starts by letting us know what Pomona PD did that many other big city neighborhoods wish they could do:

"...more than 450 lawmen from agencies all over Southern California fanned out across the city with Pomona P.D. at the spear-point of what remains the biggest municipal ass-kicking ever handed to the homeboys of 12th Street. It was a city-provided colonoscopy that had even the toughest veteranos wincing. Civic leaders and police brass vowed to crush the gang."

Let's not forget that past and continue to support Pomona Police.

There's also a hint of L.A. County firefighters meddling with these affairs:

"International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte raised eyebrows when he posted a message on the union local's Web site demanding that any cuts in the county fire services budget for Pomona "must be tied proportionally" to cuts in the city's police budget."

Consumer Spending Is Up?

I'm sure you've heard on the corporate news box recently that consumer spending rose 0.2% from a flat April. Also, incomes have risen 0.4%.

THE TRUTH: Consumer spending is up mainly because our power bills are going up. Oh, about the income increase, this is due to the hiring of Census Workers recently.

Man, I'm sick of all this crap and fake news.

McDonalds McNuggets Are Not Created Equal

While our home life has become a cost-cutting and budgeting task the last few weeks, I am thankful that one of the things we have cut are fast food eating. I say this because cutting back means not having to eat all that insane chemical stuff that's in the cheap fast food world.


According to this article, British McNuggets have less calories AND chemicals than US versions. Yuck, check this little snip out:

"American McNuggets (190 calories, 12 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat for 4 pieces) contain the chemical preservative tBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleum-based product. They also contain dimethylpolysiloxane, “an anti-foaming agent” also used in Silly Putty.

By contrast, British McNuggets (170 calories, 9 grams of fat, 1 gram of saturated fat for 4 pieces) lists neither chemical among its ingredients."

Just disgusting... no surprise either.

Today's Funtime

First off, I was very lucky to attend a great multi-cultural event in Los Angeles, thrown by the Mayor himself last night. Hopefully I can post some pictures of the event later.

But the reason I'm posting this is to remind everyone that today is the Raiders of the Lost Ark screening at the Fox. I plan to arrive with the kids around 1:30pm. The great part is after the screening, we will head over to the historic Phillips Mansion for Ice Cream and games!
